Developing a doctoral thesis is one of the first major challenges of the research career. In these early stages, it is essential that researchers are aware that their results may have not only a great scientific value but also commercial and industrial implications. For this reason, promoted by the Research Centers of Catalonia (CERCA), the CERCA Institution promotes the PIONER Awards to distinguish those researchers who have developed a doctoral thesis with clear commercial potential.
The awards aim to recognise those researchers working in one of the CERCA centres who have presented a doctoral thesis through which they propose to initiate or improve the development of a technology or product that may have an industrial or commercial application or might even make a significant specific contribution to the development of public policy.
One of the winners has been Dr. Héctor Torres for his Doctoral Thesis entitled “Fast responsive photochromic materials through nanoemulsion entrapments”, under the direction of Dr. Claudio Roscini.
The Jury has considered that the thesis focuses on the development of transparent materials that, once illuminated by sunlight or ultraviolet light, darken quickly and spontaneously, but without losing transparency. This process is reversible, robust, versatile and able to change color in just a few seconds. The technology already has an American patent and others in process and a company that is developing smart windows based on this technology (Futurechromes). A good example of the direct transfer of basic research to the industrial world.
