Last Thursday 19th, the Societat Catalana de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (SCN2) held its second annual congress. This time, the congress was focused on the subject of biomedicine. Among other topics, it was possible to have a vision of the latest research that is being carried out in Catalonia on bioimaging, controlled administration of drugs and tissue regeneration.
The session was opened by Dr. Daniel Closa (Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona, IIBB-CSIC) who gave an interesting talk entitled: “Will Nanotechnology Become the Next “Sack Man” of Pseudoscience and Conspiracy Theories?” During his presentation, Dr. Closa made the audience to think about the importance of scientific communication in modern times.
Subsequently, the morning session started, focusing the attention on tissue regeneration and biosensing-bioimaging. The first speaker was Dr. Imma Ratera (Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, ICMAB-CSIC) with her talk entitled “Impact of Stimuli-Responsive and Hierarchical RGD Nanostructured Surfaces on Integrin-Mediated Cell Guidance“. She explained about the use of nanoparticles to guide cell growth. Afterwards, Dr. Elisabeth Engel (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, IBEC) gave us a talk entitled “Biomaterials to Promote in situ Regeneration Microenvironments“, where she showed us a specific case of bone regeneration. The morning session was closed by our group member Dr. Salvio Suárez-García (ICN2) who presented a talk entitled “Nanoscale Coordination Polymers as Novel Bioimaging Probes“. In this case, Dr. Suárez-García showed the use of nanostructured coordination polymers for their application in different imaging techniques for diagnosis. Besides, he highlighted how with the emergence of nanoscience, it has allowed us to give new applications to existing materials through new approaches.
After a break, it was the turn of the younger researchers to present their work through the exhibition of posters in an online format. The attendees chose two researchers as winners for their scientific quality: Lídia Ballell (Nanomol Technologies SL and ICMAB-CSIC) and Teodora Andrian (IBEC).
Finally, in the afternoon session, we had the opportunity to attend different presentations by excellent researchers in the area of drug and gene delivery. First, Dr. Salvador Borrós Gómez (Institut Químic de Sarrià, IQS) presented his talk entitled: “Stable and Efficient Generation of Poly (β-aminoester)s for RNAi Delivery“, showing the design of an RNA-carrying nanomaterial. Then, Dr. Ana B. Caballero (Universitat de Barcelona, UB) gave her talk entitled: “Nanochaperones: A Hopeful Therapeutic Approach to Fight Conformational Diseases?“, showing a promising solution for treating disorders such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. After that, Dr. Marta Pérez (Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge, IDIBELL-UB) presented her talk entitled: “Polyurea/Polyurethane Nanocapsules Targeting the Acidic Tumor Microenvironment as Smart Drug Delivery Vehicles“, showing, how to play with pH and the drug delivery for cancer treatment. Finally, the last speaker was Dr. Pere Santamaria (Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer, IDIBAPS) who gave an inspiring talk entitled: “Peptide-Major Histocompatibility Complex-based Nanomedicines for the Treatment of Autoimmune Disease: Engineering, Mechanisms, Diseases“, highlighting how currently nanomedicine is moving to the clinic to treat autoimmune diseases.
As a closure of the event, a round table on Nanotechnology in the Medicine of the Future was held. The round table was formed by the active participation of the nanoscientists Elena Fernández, María Tenorio, Jordi Floriach-Clark, Coral García, Lídia Ballell and Dr. Salvio Suárez-Garcia, among others. In this round table, different topics about science communication, the role of nanotechnology in the medicine and future steps, were discussed.
From Nansofun, we greatly appreciate the organization of this event, and we congratulate its organizers for the success of the scientific congress!
We hope to actively participate again in future events!
